Upcoming Exhibit Events at the Polasek

In conjunction with our current exhibit, Contemporary Visions of Frantz Zéphirin: Haitian Mystic, come explore the Mardi Gras traditions of the Creole/Haitian community at the Polasek Museum!

This FREE open house features lectures, hands-on art activities, food and music fit for a family-friendly Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the long fast for the Lent period in many Christian churches, and is central to the Haitian tradition shared by our exhibiting artist, Frantz Zéphirin.

See where Christianity, Vodou, and Carnival overlap in this cultural intersection that embraces our growing Haitian community.

Join us for the art, fun and celebration!

In conjunction with our current exhibit, Contemporary Visions of Frantz Zéphirin: Haitian Mystic, discover more about Haitian culture from Rollins Art Librarian/Digital Archivist, Rachel Walton, who wrote her master’s thesis on Haiti in the eighteenth century.

Walton will provide an art history backdrop to help us understand the progression of modern Haitian art trends.

The lecture will be located in the Historic Capen House on the Polasek Campus at 7:00 pm, followed by an informal gallery walk through of our current exhibit in the Polasek Gallery.

$5 Admission, limited seating, please pre-register below or email rfrisby@polasek.org with any questions.

Attention art and book-lovers! Join us for our first-ever Polasek book club inspired by the artwork in our current exhibit.  Every quarter, our book club selection will be based on our changing exhibitions, so there will always be new source of inspiration to link with the literature.  You will be able to reflect on the artwork as well as the assigned book.  The selection for this quarter is, God Loves Haiti: A Novel by Dimitry Elias Léger.

Registration is required to attend and light refreshments will be included with admission.  Books must be purchased and read ahead of time and may be purchased though our local bookstore, The Writers Block, located on 124 E Welbourne Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789; or visit on the web at: http://www.writersblockbookstore.com/.  As our community business partner, The Writer’s Block will stock our book club selections so you don’t have to worry about ordering or waitlists. Lauren Zimmerman, proprietor of the Writer’s Block, will guide the group in thoughtful discussion.

The group will meet in The Capen House at the Polasek.  Participants will have access to the gardens and current exhibition in the Polasek Gallery for “final thought” discussion and brief gallery tour of our current exhibition, “Contemporary Visions of Frantz Zéphirin: Haitian Mystic” with Curator, Rachel Frisby.  Share your point of view, learn about a new culture, and meet kindred spirits who share your enthusiasm for literature—join the Artful Book Club today!

The First session of the Artful Book Club will be held on:
