Upcoming Museum Events at the Polasek

In collaboration with local stroke advocacy groups, the Polasek hosts its Annual Stroke Awareness event this May, in honor of National Stroke Awareness Month. Come early, beginning at 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, and take advantage of simple, non-invasive, affordable, accurate vascular health screenings on the Polasek grounds with Life Line Screening’s professional Ultrasound Medical Team. They will be using state-of- the-art Doppler Ultrasound Technology to scan arteries.

According to the National Stroke Association, 80% of strokes can be prevented, yet, 4 out of 5 people never show an advanced warning sign prior to having a stroke. This is why it is so important to have a preventive screening of your arteries. Plaque build-up in the arteries (Atherosclerosis) is the number ONE cause of stroke. Find out if you or those you love are at risk of stroke with this dramatically discounted screening package of only $149. The Stroke Screening package includes 4 Vascular Screenings: Ultrasound Screenings of the Carotid Arteries/Plaque Screening, Heart Rhythm Screening (EKG to check for Atrial Fibrillation), Ultrasound of the abdomen (screens for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm), and PAD (Peripheral Arterial disease screening). Pre-registration is necessary. There are three ways to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129: call toll-free 1-888- 653-6441; visit http://lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle; or text the word circle to 797979. You will receive a full health report directly from a Board Certified Vascular Physician, explaining your risk factors from screenings results. Life Line Screening encourages you to review your screening results with your own doctor if follow up care may be needed. Preventive screenings save lives!

With paid admission to the Museum, visitors will also be able to meet our community partner, the Bcenter, a nonprofit serving stroke survivors and their families, and take part in an art therapy watercolor activity in the gardens from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Representatives from the Bcenter, and the organization’s Founder, Valerie Greene, will be there to advocate, educate, and take part in the hands- on art activity. All ages and abilities are welcome to participate! If you think you can’t paint, think again, as everyone will leave with a gorgeous work of art.

Then, at 6:15 pm join Museum Curator, Rachel Frisby, in the Gardens as she leads a free sculpture tour of Mr. Polasek’s work that he created AFTER he suffered a debilitating stroke, which left him paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. He, nevertheless, went on to create award-winning and powerful works of art. You will be truly inspired by the Polasek story as you see the art firsthand. Meet on the circular driveway near the monumental limestone sculpture of Man Carving His Own Destiny in front of the Polasek Museum entrance.

Then, promptly at 7:00 pm, we'll begin a free documentary film screening in the Historic Capen House. “My Beautiful Broken Brain” is a 2014 documentary film about the life of then-34- year-old Lotje Sodderland after she suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. As seating is limited for the movie screening, we ask that you pre-register to ensure a seat at info@polasek.org.

An entire day jam-packed with stroke awareness activities not to miss! Be proactive about your own health and join us at the Polasek– your source for healing and inspirational art.
